Tsunamis are devastating natural disasters that cannot be stopped or easily prepared for. A tsunami is a high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbances of the sea floor. Tsunamis usually occur in the Pacific and Indian Ocean.cnand and This website is here to help inform of what affects tsunamis can have on people and the environment, how tsunamis form, how to prepare for a tsunamis and what to do during a tsunami, major tsunami occurrences and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. A bibliography is provided, where all my reliable recourses of information are found. How tsunamis form |

Tsunamis form in a variety of ways. They can be the consequence of underwater volcanoes erupting, icebergs calving and earthquakes. Large underwater earthquakes are the biggest responsibility of tsunamis.
First, the abrupt movement on the ocean floor due to the earthquake sends force upwards, which is then transferred into the water. Next, the tide will pull back and the water column is pushed high up above the sea level. The water then rushes away from the epicentre at very high speeds, but at this stage, the waves are short. As the tsunami reaches the coast, it slows and the wave height increases due to the shallow waters and the continental slope. Lastly, the waves pile up and rush over the land.
